Lighthouse

While the 1970s marked their commercial peak, Lighthouse is still an active, touring powerhouse today. What makes their current era so special is how seamlessly they have blended original members with new talent to keep their massive, 10-piece “rock orchestra” sound alive.

Here is how the legacy of Lighthouse is being carried forward today:

The Anchors of the Band
  • Paul Hoffert (Keyboards & Vibes): The classically trained co-founder is still anchoring the band’s signature sound. He remains the musical director and continues to drive the intricate arrangements that defined Lighthouse.
  • Russ Little (Trombone): An original member from their very first lineup in 1969, Little continues to bring the essential jazz-horn flavor to their live shows.
  • Ralph Cole (Guitar): Though the founding guitarist recently retired from the road to enjoy semi-retirement, his defining riffs set the template for the band. Guitarist Marc Ganetakos has stepped in to handle the live six-string duties.
Filling Massive Shoes
  • Dan Clancy (Lead Vocals): Replacing a beloved classic-era singer like Bob McBride (who passed away in 1998) is incredibly difficult, but Dan Clancy stepped into the lead vocalist role in 1992. He has now been the voice of Lighthouse for over 30 years—significantly longer than any other singer in the band’s history—capturing their classic energy while making the songs his own.
  • The Drum Throne: When founding drummer, singer, and primary songwriter Skip Prokop passed away in 2017, it was a massive blow. In a beautiful tribute to his legacy, his son Jamie Prokop stepped in to play drums for a time, keeping the rhythm section a literal family affair. Today, veteran drummer Paul DeLong shares the drum duties.
The Rest of the “Big Sound”

The commitment to never using backing tracks means Lighthouse still tours with a full ensemble. The modern lineup is rounded out by seasoned veterans like Doug Moore (bass), Peter Kadar (keyboards), Chris Howells (trumpet), and Simon Wallis and Michael Stuart (saxes and flutes).

Despite all the years and lineup shifts, they have refused to downsize. If you see them live today, you are still getting the real, roaring mix of rock, jazz, and classical music that Skip Prokop and Paul Hoffert dreamed up on an airplane in 1969.

Here is a look at the history and legacy of Lighthouse:

Formation and “The Big Sound”

The band was formed in Toronto in 1969 by drummer/vocalist Skip Prokop and classically trained keyboardist Paul Hoffert. The two met by chance on a flight and discussed the idea of a massive ensemble. They recruited guitarist Ralph Cole and assembled a 13-piece band that included seasoned rock players and members of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. Their live debut in 1969 at Toronto’s Rock Pile was introduced by jazz legend Duke Ellington, and their second gig was at New York’s Carnegie Hall.

Major Milestones

Festival Staples
1969-1970
Lighthouse became massive draws on the festival circuit. They famously turned down an invitation to play at Woodstock, but they did perform at the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival—where they caused such a stir that they were the only act asked to perform twice, sharing the bill with The Who, The Doors, and Joni Mitchell.

The Breakthrough
1971
Vocalist Bob McBride joined the band, bringing a soulful clarity that tightened their sound. They released the album One Fine Morning, shifting from extended orchestral suites to more concise, radio-ready hits. The title track was a smash hit in Canada and crossed into the U.S. Top 30, spending 12 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100.

Platinum Success
1972
The band released Lighthouse Live!, which made history as the very first Canadian album to sell over a million copies. This era also saw the release of their classic summer anthem, “Sunny Days”.

Disbandment & Rebirth
1976-Present
The financial strain of touring with a 13-piece band and shifting lineups led to their disbandment in 1976. However, the core members reformed for reunions in the 1980s and officially reunited in 1993. Today, Lighthouse continues to tour, blending the legacy of original members (like Paul Hoffert and Russ Little) with new musicians to keep their signature brass-and-string rock sound alive.

Essential Hits

Beyond their signature song, Lighthouse built a catalog of tracks that remain staples of classic rock radio:

  • “One Fine Morning” (1971): Their definitive track, featuring a driving horn arrangement and soaring vocals.
  • “Sunny Days” (1972): A laid-back, infectious hit that became a permanent fixture of Canadian summers.
  • “Pretty Lady” (1973): Recorded after Bob McBride missed a session, forcing the rest of the band to step up and sing the complex vocal harmonies themselves.
  • “Take It Slow (Out In The Country)” (1971): Another major radio success that showcased their shift toward tighter pop-rock songwriting.
